What Monuments to the Second World War Tell Us About Our History and Ourselves

An exploration of monuments around the world, and an attempt to understand how memorialisation has warped the way we remember the Second World War. Statues are built to pay testament to the past, but when it comes to representing our heroes or martyrs, our villans or our shameful legacies, they can too often end up holding us hostage to bad history.

A Spectator, The Times, Sunday Times and Mail on Sunday book of the year 2020.

‘Thoughtful and evocative’ – Max Hastings, Sunday Times

‘Brilliantly researched’ – Daily Mail
