I am a historian and literary critic specialising in Anglo-Saxon England. I read for my AHRC-funded DPhil at Magdalen College, Oxford, and graduated in 2016. I also lectured at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the 2013-14 academic year. Since leaving academia after my doctorate, I’ve mostly been writing articles for History Today, BBC History, and Fortean Times, amongst others. I was invited by Reaktion Books to write a full-length book based on an article I wrote for History Today in 2018, which is currently taking up most of my time as the deadline for the manuscript looms! The book is called Basilisks and Beowulf, and is a study of the monster in Anglo-Saxon culture.
I live in a tiny Nottinghamshire village with my wife, cats, and dog. Away from history and literature I’m a keen bassist, footballer, and dog agility handler.
