Mara is a native New Yorker and self-acclaimed Citizen of the World, who began a love affair with London more than 20 years ago. She began writing short stories as a child but moved to novels when a BBC history programme caught her interest.
City of Spies is set in Lisbon, 1943. When her cover is blown, Special Operations Executive agent Elisabeth de Mornay flees Paris. Pursued by the Gestapo she makes her way to Lisbon, where she receives a new identity and a new mission: to infiltrate – and destroy – a German espionage ring targeting Allied ships. But to accomplish this, she needs to forge links with the very people who want to see her dead. And the tricky thing is that in the City of Spies, no one is who they claim to be.
